Denny Hulme keeps his McLaren M14A ahead of Jack Brabham's Brabham BT33 during the opening laps of the shambolic Spanish Grand Prix at Jarama. The organisers decided to guarantee a start to past world champions, and recent G.P. winners. Everybody else would have to qualify for the over-subscribed grid. First teams were told practice wouldn't be timed, but qualifying would be. They then reversed their decision after the fact. Drivers had their cars wheeled to the grid, before being told they didn't qualify. Heated arguments delayed the start, before the field was given the green flag. On lap 1 Jackie Oliver's BRM suspension failed, crashing into Jacky Ickx's Ferrari 312B, the impact puncturing the Ferrari's fuel tanks, and engulfing both cars. Both drivers escaped, though Ickx suffered nasty burns to his back. Marshalls sprayed water on the cars initially, spreading the burning fuel, before using foam to quell the blaze. The race continued, many drivers spinning on the 'foam rink', one being Brabham who spun twice, but still charged up to second place, reeling in leader Jackie Stewart, until the Brabham's engine failed. Hulme would retire on lap 10 with ignition trouble.
